I was given a Dell XPS L502X laptop. High speed internet costs almost 3 times more than dial-up. The laptop doesn't have a dial-up modem. I called Dell and they have an external usb dial-up modem for $64.95. What is the difference between a $64.95 modem and the $10 - $25 modems available at Amazon, eBay, etc.? Is there something special about the $64 Dell modem? Do I need a Dell modem for the Dell laptop?

The Amazon/ebay should work just as well. The "DELL" modem has a premium on the name ;-)

"What's the difference....?"

The name Dell suggests.... but not infrequently Dell rebadge items they buy in at one (a lower) price, and then sell on with a suitable mark up.

The buyer/end user reviews for things sold on Amazon are often worth reviewing; as they can help decide on a proposed purchase...

Years back Dell rebadged either an IBM or Samsung crt mointor (can't remember which) and sold it on for more than one could buy it elsewhere under the orginal brand name.

You should be able to find a USB software modem for about $20. Make sure it's compatible with the version of Windows you're running - Windows 8.1? As the others have said, a Dell modem will likely be a different brand with a Dell label slapped on it, probably a US Robotics model.
