USB thumb drives are unreliable & should not be used for long term storage. If you want to create Win8 installation media, it should be a DVD. Do you have a store bought PC (Acer, Dell, HP, etc) or a custom build? If it's store bought, have you created the factory recovery discs yet?

As riider comments; usb/flash drives are not to be relied upon for serious long term storage, or use as a recovery media... Far better to use DVD for this.

Also ensure "all" your personal files (typically photos at least) are safely copied/duplicated off the system entirely. Typically DVD at least (make 2 sets, label and store safely), and to an external hard drive too is nice(r)... Check and update those copies at regular intervals...

Again as per riider, have you made the recovery disk set for your system as advised by just about all the popular makes/vendors of computers these days? Sadly so many don't and then wish later that they had... If you haven't - do it now... Then" worry about" making the usb/dvd boot media...
