I want to delay some programs and start others.
The order at start up needs (for me) to be changed. How can I do this?

Your spec says Vista but you have posted in the Win 8 forum. Which is it?

I don't know of any way to do this without a third party program - this sort of thing (there is a free version):

I don't know anything about the above website so make sure you uncheck any unwanted goodies (if any), or go for Custom Install if available.

Keep watching because maybe someone will have a particular program that they recommend and vouch for.

I've got a better idea. Disable all start-up programs except for those that are absolutely necessary, anti-virus for example. Your computer will boot faster & run better without all the clutter running in the background. Start the programs when you need them, close when you're done.

Yes, you can always make a shortcut to the exe files to start them manually when required. Even the ones that start with registry entries can be disabled in msconfig and there will be an exe file somewhere.

Strictly msconfig is for diagnostics but I've never run into any issue by disabling things there. In Win 8 the startups are part of Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del).

I am running Windows 8.1 on my computer but was using my wife's computer when I posted and hers runs on Vista.

OK thanks a lot. Probably worth a quick mention in the original post another time, although I appreciate that you had posted it on Win 8. Unfortunately we get quite a few "wrong forum" posts so we can never be quite certain.

Not sure who I told. I have been using Winpatrol a free program for both delaying and/or changing the order of startup in Windows 8.1 and other Windows versions. The program is easy to download and to set up. It runs very well and has solved all my problems without any problems.

I do not hesitate to recommend this program as a very easy and good solution to start up problems.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Ah I see. Seems like answer 3 on your other post was the fix then (July 13th). So. I'm not really sure why you asked for a fix again on here but whatever, thanks for the additional feedback.
