Solved Can't make PATH variable work in Windows 8

April 19, 2015 at 10:42:42
Specs: Windows 64
Hi,

My PATH environment variable ends with c:\cygwin32\bin, however when I try to execute make (which is in the bin folder), I get the message that make is not recongnized as a program etc. If, on the other hand, I type the full path c:\cygwin32\bin\make in the DOS window, then it works properly. It worked fine in Windows 7, but it doesn´t work now for Windows 8. I appreciate if you have any suggestions for me on how to fix this.

Thanks,
Marcus.

Thanks you for your reply, Derek. I just discovered that the problem was the blank spaces inserted after the semicolons. It seems that spaces are not allowed in PATH. Removing them fixed the problem.

The most likely explanation is simply that you have made an error in the PATH variable. Check it carefully.

Thanks for the reply. This is so simple, and still I can´t see what is wrong. I checked the names, they are all correct. Now I managed to fix the problem, simply by inserting the new path in front of the previous ones, instead of in the end. For some reason still unknown to me, now it works.

When you were in Windows did you ensure that your folder view were set to show all folders and files including system protected? Better say that it is unwise to run permanently with protected files showing because you get desktop.ini files popping up in user areas such as the desktop.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
