cannot update to win8.1

December 11, 2014 at 11:18:38
Specs: Windows 8.0
Trying to update win8 to win8.1 and after all the downloading, getting devices ready, applying PC settings, etc I get the message "Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation." I clicked ok and got "Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0x8007002C - 0x2004001C."
What do I need to do to get 8.1 installed?
Thanks for your help.

John

Microsoft message boards suggest removing any external device save keyboard/mouse, updating all drivers, and disabling any security software. Why someone would attempt to upgrade their OS while any security software was installed is beyond me.

In addition to above:
Restarting as indicated by the failed install is useful.
If these do not help, try restarting in Safe Mode (F8 should still bring up the advanced boot options in Windows 8) and try the update from there since less running things on the machine can only help.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

How do I try and install win8.1 if I have already downloaded it but could not install it. Do not want to download again if I don't have to.

MS guard the 8.1 download file so I reckon you might be stuck with getting a new download. However, if you feel adventurous then see these (I've not used them personally):

This means you have a file if it should abort again.
