Specs: Windows 8.1, Intel 6 Gb
Hi to all,

I am (still) using MS Office 2003 on a laptop Under Windows 8.1.

I can absolutely not backup my mail file (Outlook.pst), as there is an unknown to me program or service which blocks the file, even after a cold reboot.

I can find no such progrm in the task manager.

Can anybody help me ?

Thanks in advance - Claude

Office 2003 is not compatible with Windows 8, you need a newer version:

Although MS does not support Outlook 2003 on Windows 8 it runs perfectly fine on many systems, including mine (even after upgrading to Win 8.1 with the latest update).

I assume you are using this procedure and have located the Outlook.pst file:

I have just copied Outlook.pst to my USB disk. Does the problem arise when you try to copy the file? If so, exactly what does it say and what program is mentioned? Give as much info as possible and with luck someone will be able to help you.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi Derek,

I agree with you, Office 2003 runs smoothly Under Windows 8 / 8.1, which was definitely not the case with Windows 7 (a good surprise !).

I just tried again to copy the Outlook pst file (which I had no problem to locate) and, to my immense surprise ... this time it worked ! don't ask my why ...

I am confused to have bothered you with a problem which solved itself by kind of a miracle ! I'll return to the forum again should the problem arise again, which will probably be the case in the future.

Meanwhile, thanks to all for your interest - Claude

Hi to all,

Just for your info, I think I have found the reason for the problem and why it disappared.

For some other testing, I installed yesterday Office 2007 (which I hate, as I feel really uncomfortable with the ribbon interface), then I re-installed good old Office 2003.

But this time, I did NOT install the SP3 package, and I think this makes the difference. SP3 presumably installs some extra security which prevents for copying the mail file. My hypothesis.

Have a nice day - Claude

Strange, my Office 2003 has all the updates yet Outlook.pst copied just fine. In fact I've had no trouble with Office 2003 on Win 8, despite MS's lack of support. Also they provided all Office updates until they ceased new ones on 8 April 2014. The only issues I've every had are what everyone gets, whatever OS they use - plenty of those.

Whatever, good to hear it is OK now and thanks for popping back to let us know.
