Solved Boot from External DVD drive to install Windows 8 on laptop

Specs: Windows8.1 Pro with Media Centre x64, 2.793 GHz / 4096 MB
Hi

Just got a Dell 5748 Laptop with following specs:
i5 5th Gen
4 GB RAM
1TB Hard Drive

Now the system didn't come with a operating system installed. The Laptop itself doesn't have a optical drive. Now I have a Windows 8.1 genuine DVD that I want to install and I was wondering if I get an external USB DVD Drive will I be able to boot from the external DVD drive and install Windows.

Waiting for your response.

Generally Win 8.1 should install if you put the external ahead of the HD in bootup but you will need to ensure that USB boot facility is available for the Dell 5748. I was unable to determine this for certain so maybe someone else will know.

This might be useful if you hit problems, particularly the USB ports bit:

If this Dell will allow a usb boot then it will (ought to) be listed in the bios settings; boot order/sequence?

Sorry I couldnt respond back as I was busy, It does have a Boot from USB option. So I think i am going to buy an external drive and use that.

It worked. No errors or anything. I just connected the DVD external drive and set it to first boot and then inserted inserted my Windows DVD in it. The setup started and everything went well. except for the fact that the setup ran slow then usual. That would be because of using the external USB drive I think.
