Are your programs 16-bit ones? And is your OS 64-bit? 64-bit Windows won't run 16-bit programs. But you can always run a 16- or 32-bit OS in a virtual machine and run your programs on that.

Windows 8.1 adds some nice UI changes, especially if you are a traditional desktop user.

However I don't think the upgrade affects application compatibility. If the program does not work under windows 8.0, it is unlikely windows 8.1 will fix it.

Fortunately the 8.1 update now seems to be stable - I waited some weeks for the bugs to be fixed before I installed it. The way I work my machine it didn't make much difference but the time will come that MS will only support 8.1 onwards, in the same way that they did with service packs for other computers. I tend to get major updates but definitely not when they are first issued.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Unfortunately wrong !

Since I moved to win 8.1, all legacy programs which ran in an Oracle VM virtual machine can no longer be installed, whatever the virtual machine OS (win 2000, Vista, XP etc.).

Really a bad surprise !
