XPS 15 Keeps shutting down on its own

June 3, 2013 at 14:53:30
Specs: Windows 7, 2.3GHz i5 6GB
dell XPS 15 laptop shuts down on its own.
Very frustrating as I cannot control it.
Sometimes I have caught it by pressing ctrl alt delete, but when I press it now its asking me to force shut down or cancel except that it wont let me cancel.

I know I dont have a virus as I have too many things running.
AVG/ SpyHunter/ Advanced System Care/ MalawareBytes/ Super Anti spware.

I have heard of the system over heating.. it doesnt do this all the time but when it has I have lost whatever I was working on..

Make sure all the cooling vents are clear of dirt and dust, and always sit it on a hard, flat surface when using it to maintain an even gap underneath it, not directly on your lap where your clothing can block the vents underneath.

You may also want to try one of those "laptop coolers" which are popular:

The Belkin one with a deep ridge across it and an integrated fan seems worth a try:

Just as an experiment to see if it might be a heat issue & having done the checks mentioned by Phil22, open 'Power Options' in Control Panel, click 'change plan settings', then click 'advanced power settings', scroll down to 'processor power management' and change 'system cooling policy' from 'Active' to 'Passive' & see if this has any effect.
