xcopy /d to network disk fails

May 6, 2011 at 22:49:56
Specs: Windows 7
I use xcopy to backup files. My command looks like this:

xcopy c:\inetpub\wwwroot\alex d:\wwwrootsave /d /s /c /y

It works without fail.

Recently I switched the target to my network drive (MYBOOK). Now my commands looke like this:

net use k: \\mybook\birs
xcopy c:\inetpub\wwwroot\alex k:\wwwrootsave /d /s /c /y
net use k: /d /y

At first look, this also works perfectly. However, when it comes to incrementally backing up new or changed files, I notice a strange behaviour:
Files with an change date newer than the date I started using Windows 7 will always be copied, other files not. This only happens when copying to the network disk!

Can anybody explain this and, even better, suggest ways to correct the problem?
Thank you very much.

It just occurred to me that I am using Windows 7 Premium 64bit now, when before I used Window XP. It seem that all files created or changed on my 64bit System behave as described: when xcopied to the network drive with switch /d they will be copied regardless whether they have changed or not; when copied to my internal hard drive, only change files are copied.

I still cannot make head or tail of it.
