Microsoft Word should be able to open them - it's certainly listed
as one of the filetypes available.

Unfortunately no. Microsoft word did not open the files. The floppy disk drive is not detecting the files in the floppy

If windows can't read the floppy disk, then no program will be able to open the files.

Or do I misunderstand?

"The floppy disk drive is not detecting the files in the floppy"

Well there is your problem. Floppy disk only have a shelf life of around 5 years. How old are they? If you don't move you files to CD soon you will be in trouble of losing every thing.

If you go into the My Computer open the floppy drive and see the WPF files and want to know how to open them from there, then what you do is Right-Click the file then select Open With -> Select the SELECT A PROGRAM FROM THE LIST OF INSTALLED PROGRAMS radio. -> Hit OK and Select Word in the list.
