You can hold down the Power button until it shuts down (about 10 seconds) and then restart. Then manually do a Windows Update and select less updates at a time and repeat. If you see SP1 as an update definitely do that first. If you have further problems contact the store you purchased it at or the factory support due to your warranty. You are covered for this under the warranty and also you do not want to try too much before contacting them on this.

75 Updates sounds like a lot of updates for a new computer, it almost sounds like your system sat on the shelf quite a while before you got it (older version number) so consider that when you talk to them. If it looked repacked when you got it, consider asking the store for a new one.

Thank you for your reply to my question. I did that a little while after I posted I figured that if I screwed something up I have backup disc and a restore disc that I had burned last night for the system. BTW the laptop is a factory refurbished.

Again thanks so much for your help

Good instincts making those back up and restore disks. The 'factory' or place that did the 'factory' restore probably did a few tests. blew out the dust, and did a 'factory restore' on the hard drive (wipe the hard drive and bring it back the the 'shipped condition) and did not run any updates. That is why you had that many updates. Remember you still do have some type of warranty (though probably a short one) so if you have a problem that you cannot easily fix, bring it back for another one.

I have got it all straightened out now all updates are installed successfully except for the one that it was hanging on of which was IE 9

Finger is there even a SP1 update out for win 7 yet because it wasn't included in the updates I installed.

Thanks again for you y'all's help

Yes, SP1 has been out for a few months already.
