Updating is NOT the same as upgrading to a different operating system. While you should ALWAYS maintain a current back up on your personal files, updating Windows 7 or your primary programs (Office, Antivirus, Adobe, etc) does not affect your personal files and is considered to be completely safe (that does not mean that another underlying problem might not cause a problem during an update, but those are typically recoverable from and fairly rare). You should keep your updates on automatic or check them manually about weekly for security and stability reasons. While you are at it, make sure that your system restore is turned on, set your automatic back up, and create a system repair disk. Your best back up would be to an external hard drive or possibly to a second separate internal hard drive (desktops only), though DVD's do work if you do not need more than a few DVD's to hold all of your files and folders.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
