Your specs say mac...but if it's a PC with win 7, just borrow anyones win 7 disc (doesn't matter which one...basic, pro, etc) put it in the tray and set it up so that the pc boots up using the DVD. Then you can do a repair safely and not lose any progs etc on the laptop. It will work fine, I've done it with many netbooks, laptops, etc...it will load up the windows files and boot up.

HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions

You can also make a Windows 7 Repair Disk on any Windows 7 machine as long as both machines are either 64bit or 32bit and use that. Boot to the repair disk and first try a Start Up Repair and if that does not work, do a System Restore which uses the repair disk's restore software but the stored restore points from your hard drive.
If these do not help, you probably have a hardware issue like a bad hard drive, memory, or other possibilities. Post back results and details on the machine model number.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

It might have just got stuck when the battery failed. Try disconnecting domestic power and removing battery. Hold Power Off/On button in for about 20 seconds. Re-assemble and see if it helps. Every now and then this does the trick for stuck computers and it is quick to try.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
