I am running W7 Starter on a Compaq 110 netbook. The setup is fairly standard in terms of software. Recently W7 has not been able to configure its updates. I get the error message "Failed to configure reverting (reversing) update...) The problem seemed to begin when I activated a version of MS Ofc that comes with W7 Strtr and it updated. I have uninstalled that version of Ofc and used System Restore to backtrack but no luck. Otherwise, the system works fine, but I need the updates.

"but I need the updates"
Try the updates 1 at a time, occasionally trying more than 1.

Try a system restore to a date further back, probably a couple of weeks before. Use 'Show more restore points' to show you more options.
Then Download, Update, and Run Malwarebytes to make sure that the problem did not start with an infection that just happened to coincide with the update.
Remove all it finds and post the report back when it is done for review.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thanks for the answers. I don't know what the problem was, it seems to have resolved itself. Maybe it was trying to install too many updates at once (167), but now since the earlier post they have been successful. I removed the battery for a minute cause the process stopped in the middle and wouldn't progress. It booted, configured the updates and has been fine since. Go figure! Anyway, if it stops again I'll let you know
