Windows 7 taskbar freezing and crashing

Microsoft Windows 7 ultimate 32-bit

Specs: Windows 7, intel core 2 duo @ 2.00 gb ram
Yesterday i noticed that when running various standard applications on my dell inspiron 1525 (3 years old) started crashing and not responding. I have had various problems big and small in the past years however this particular is very strange as it happened very suddenly with no noticeable cause. When i boot up my laptop i get to the desktop and if i click on the taskbar (or even hover the cursor over) the computer will instantly crash and go to a black screen. I am able to move my cursor around when this happens. On one instance the pc did go to the blue screen of death however it only occured once and i didnt have enough time to remember what it said. Another point i would like to make is that the computer works in safe mode perfectly with no hitch and only in normal boot mode will the problem occur. I can hear a small beeping noise from somewhere around my hard drive when the problem happens but i am not sure what the problem is. I looked on some forums and saw that people were having similar problems possibly a problem with their battery, however others said it was problems with the hard drive. I dont want to spend any money until i am sure. I would really appreciate some help to this problem, thanks.

1st run the system from power with battery taken out.
this will prove if its a battery issue.
2nd, run a disk check.
3rd save all your files..just in case.
4th, if you created an image of your system when it was good, reimage.
5th run a memory test.
6th remove the memory sticks 1 at a time and replace.
7th blow out all the air vents with a can of compressed air or vacuum, or both.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....
