Windows 7 System image restore (POST 1)

Specs: Windows 7, IntelCore 2 Duo E4500/4 GB RAM
When performing a system image restore (Win7), I get a message at the very end of the restore process to my “C” drive as follows: "Windows backup failed to extend or mount the file system on the recovered volume (0x80780124). When I close that dialog box, I’m led back to the Windows Recovery Environment. I clicked on restart. After my system POSTs, I get a DOS screen that I can select “Start Windows Normally”. My system is a Dell Inspiron 530, (2) internal 1TB Seagates, 1 Ext. Seagate USB Free Agent and 1 Ext. Seagate USB GoFlex. If I disconnect the USB GoFlex and the internal SATA D drive and keep the "C" and the Free Agent drives connected (the image backup is on the FreeAgent), will this fix the problem?

Why are you trying to perform a restore?

Reboot after clicking on “Start Windows Normally” and the computer settles into Windows 7. Shutdown and restart. I think you will see the system start normally then.

I would disconnect the USB's yes, but if its failing due to being unable to mount or extend the file system then it seems there is something wrong with the recovery partition.

Have you tried booting to the drive anyways even after the backup claims to have failed?

Are you trying to restore an image of your C drive back to the same drive or partition? (not another back up type or system restore)
How was the image made?
How are you restoring it?
Make sure that only the one hard drive is listed as bootable in your BIOS.
Disconnect any external drives unless they are needed as the source of the disk image.
Once we know what program made the image (Windows 7 back up or another program), where the image is stored, and how you are reloading it (Install Disk, Repair Disk, or software other recovery disk) we can advise you better.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Seagate shipped out another 1TB hard drive the other day to me (the old one was failing and that was my C drive). I had a good image backup stored on the FreeAgent. I put in the System Repair Disc created a few weeks ago to start the process of restoring the OS and all apps. The image I stored on the FreeAgent was created with Windows 7's built-in Image Backup utility. The date of the image backup was January 5, 2013.

On Friday, when the replacement drive arrived, I used the diskpart utility from the "CMD" screen. I made a partition first with the primary switch. I followed up with making the partition active. Lastly, I used the format fs-ntfs quick statement. After all that was accomplished, I booted into the Recovery Environment using the same System Repair Disc to do the image restore).

I watched it complete the image restoration on the replacement hard drive from seagate right to the end; that's when that message comes up about the backup failed to extend or mount the file system, etc. etc. When the machine reboots, Windows starts normally as if nothing happened. All apps and files are restored normally.

Yes, I am doing an image restore to the C drive; but it's a replacement drive from Seagate (the old one was failing).

The image was made using Windows 7's "Create a System Image" utility.

I'm restoring the image using the generated System Repair Disc which was created for me after the image was backed up.

Yes, the C drive is the only bootable drive. I checked it using the Disk Management utiiity in Windows 7. And I checked the BIOS; it is the first drive listed in the Boot order sequence.

I will try your suggestion to disconnect the GOFLEX ext. drive and the second internal hard drive (D Drive). But I will keep the FreeAgent ext. drive powered up since that's where the backup image resides.

If your drive image included only C drive and not the hidden boot partition, then you will probably need to perform a Start Up Repair from the Repair Disk with only the one hard drive connected so Windows can build the boot sector.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Regarding the original post I made concerning the Windows 7 Image Backup problem (Windows backup failed to extend or mount the file system on the recovered volume [0x80780124]), I powered down the system, disconnected the ext. Seagate GoFlex, then disconnected the internal Seagate D drive, opened the CD/DVD tray and inserted the Windows 7 System Image Restore CD, booted from that, went through the steps to restore the image file out on the Seagate FreeAgent and waited patiently until it was finished. And don't ya know....still comes up with that message. Whatareyagonnado......

Maybe I should try an image backup on the internal Seagate D drive and then an image restore from THAT drive.

Correct & make sure that drive is NTFS.
