Windows 7 SP1 64-Bit on friend's laptop not updating

November 2, 2016 at 02:21:57
Specs: Windows 7 sp1, 3.2 dual core/8gb
Hi i installed windows 7 64 bit sp1 on a friends laptop and after some months i am trying to install updates but it doesn't progress to anything to install. It hangs? I have searched far and wide and had this issue on another machine before but cant find a solution that works. I downloaded just now the 'system update readiness tool for windows 7(kb947821) oct 2014' but it is taking forever to actually install. What else can i try that really works?

Are you receiving any errors? What type/speed of internet connection do you have?

No errors. I dont know. The person brought their laptop over for updates as they have no internet connection. We did it via wifi. Close to the modem. I have experienced the same thing with other laptops in the past. I am like the community tech nerd

It can take more than 8 hours before you see any results. Possible nearly 200 update to be reported and need downloading. The whole update operation can take a day so either you let it sit there or take some offline update packs described somewhere on the forum here.

I have had good results using the repair tool at Tweaking.com for Windows and Windows Update. Make sure that you run all of the pre-scan stuff first including restarting in Safe Mode. [Ignore the big 'Download' bubble at the top of the page as it is an ad, go down the middle just under where the latest Release is listed]
Or follow this link:
