For 2D my daughter recommends GIMP of all of the ones tried, but for 3D you will need a CAD program. A while a go I tried looking for one that was free, and I thought I had found one that was a derivative of a Linux program, but I could not easily get it to work, but that was at least 6 months ago. Try searching opensource.org and see if they have something listed you can try. Good luck.

Without knowing what type of 3D you are aiming for (i.e. architecture, mechanical parts, etc.) here's a few suggestions.

Google SketchUp is free. 3D Canvas is free and does more than SketchUp imo. And of course AutoDesk has several flavors of AutoCad to choose from...at a high cost
