thenige1, index.dat files are a special breed of protected files. Windows cannot routinely access them. Recommend you get CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to manipulate them. I use it periodically to clear them out (don't worry, they get put back empty).

need to view the index.dat files as i believe my son has been on unappropriate sites and is trying to hide his history. will using this delete them or will i be able to view before deleting?

thenige1, dunno, never tried to view them, just deleted. My gut tells me you'd just need to double click to view, but...

heard of a few programs that are on the net to translate them, but the ones that i have found get flagged before i download. will try another way or another program. cheers for the other program. it lists them now all i have to do is work out how to read them.
