windows 7 opens up to the extended desktop

Specs: Windows 7
When I open my Gatewary laptop after using the extended desktop, it now only recognizes the extended desktop as the main screen and I have no option for changing back to a dual monitor. The Display under Control Panel only sees one screen. The other day I downloaded a 945 Chipset family and that cured it for the moment as something about a Pointer was not working right. Well, I have again used the extended desktop, shut the machine down and now that I am booting back, Windows 7 is only recognizing the one monitor.

Any ideas on getting back to two screens (notebook and monitor) so I can shuffle between them?

Find out which is actually controlling the video settings....either Windows or the Graphics card software (intel, Nvidia etc).

Usually there is an icon for the display adapter in the bottom right of the task bar. Some graphics cards prefer you to use their adapter software to change setttings rather than using Windows to change them.....and visa versa. Intel's looks like a blue monitor usually.
