Specs: Windows 7
I have a new laptop (Dec 09) with Windows 7. When surfing the screen freezes and I have to close Internet explorer and reopen. It happens with just one window open but is worse when several windows are open. This happens at least 15 times a day.

Use a different web-browser (which will also be safer than IE).
The most popular alternative is Mozilla Firefox:

http://www.firefox.com

It will be safer than IE because most browser-based malware is targetted at IE using a technology called 'ActiveX' which is built-in to IE. Firefox doesn't contain any ActiveX components.

If not reset properly, Internet Explorer saves everything, so much that it gets bogged down.
First, go to tools, internet options, delete under browsing history, and select nearly everything to delete (minimum: history, cookies, and temporary internet files). And do this daily!!!
Second, select settings that will limit the amount or the time these files are kept. Keep history for a day or two if at all, and keep cookies only until you close your browser.
Third, update your antiVirus/antiMalware program and scan daily.
Also, as mentioned above, you might like to try Mozilla Firefox, but if you stay with IE8, you must stay with keeping it cleaned out. (You still need to keep FF clean also, but it is a well known problem with IE (all versions).)
