Try 2GB Ram if Windows 7 is 32bit or 4GB Ram if 64bit it will run much better. Also consider any reasonable video card ($40. to $60.) if no gaming and maybe double that if gaming, it also will help.

The problem should not be lack of RAM. I ran Windows 7 Home Premium on an 9-year old Compaq Presario 1700 EA with Pentium III 850 MHz and 512 MB RAM.

I used Win XP drivers for the ethernet card and sound card because there were no drivers for Win 7 for an 9-year old notebook.

My machine never froze or anything.

Therefore, I think that the problem should lie somewhere else. Perhaps, a corrupt installation can be the culprit or a problem RAM stick.

it could be that your onboard vga is getting hot, does it freeze during high graphic activity?
i would recommend more ram anyway, 2gb.
is your cpu getting hot?
do you have a lot of programs running at the same time?

Are you running Novell? I am having the same problem but I think it is related to Novell. I have a test without the Novell Client and he has not froze yet, but I do at random times.
