Windows 7 & Dell laptop F5 Key

February 16, 2010 at 04:01:43
Specs: Windows 7
This is driving me nuts.

Everyone is familiar with the "Alt + Tab"
method of switching windows, right? It brings
up an on-screen box where you can tab
through your open windows.

Well, whenever I hit the "F5" key on my
computer that quick switch window pops up
and starts toggling through windows, in an
endless loop as if I was holding down the tab
key. There is nothing I can do to stop it. The
only solution is to turn off the computer.

This is driving me nuts as the F5 key is my
brightness adjuster on my dell laptop. This
computer is brand new and I had no such
issues before upgrading to 7.

Install the applicable Windows 7 driver for the function keys. Dell might have them posted on their website.

F5 should be F5. The brightness ought to be a combination of two keys. The F5 and a function key.

F5 is reload almost always and never twitcher or switcher or whatever they call that.

I'd test that key to be sure it is working correctly.

Wonder if it is mapped to that as a hot key.

Guess you could plug in an external keyboard and see if it also fails.

With this dell computer the way they have it set up is that F5 is the brightness. No combination needed.

If I wanted to say, refresh a webpage, I'd have to hit "Alt + F5"

Although I don't touch the damn key because it starts the loop of death.

Still at a loss

OH, OK, I had never heard of that. Dell must have that remapped.

Then Sabertooth is correct.
