windows 7 administrator password not accepted

Microsoft Windows 7 home premium
December 24, 2010 at 01:30:45
Specs: Windows 7, M 450 2.4 GHz 4 Gb
When I am logged on as a standard user, if i try to install or run anything (such as a diagnostic tool from Microsoft) or even if I try to run a Disk Cleaner, it asks for an administrator password, and it brings up the administrator account name, but it will not accept the administrator password! It says it's a bad user name or password.
I even tried changing the standard account I was using into an administrator account, and they both come up as choices, so it looks like I could enter the password to either one, but NEITHER password is recognized or accepted!

well if you forgot the admin account, it might be an idea to ask whoever setup the machine for you.
or you can save your files and do a system restore, and then your machine will be as it was the day it was bought, you can then put back your files and its all sorted..

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

Did you try just hitting the enter key when prompted for the password?

I didn't forget my admin account password. The first account I set up was an admin account by default. I do know the password and I am able to log into that account. I also set up a second account as a standard user. When I am on this standard user account, is when ihave a problem. I try to do certain stuff and it asks for an administrator password. It displays the admin account name and asks for the password. I type in the correct password (the same one I use to log into that account) and it says bad account or password.

I have tried the correct password, the password for the standard user account, and yes, even just hitting Enter. I get the same error.

I even tried changing the standard user to an admin and i still get the message asking for an admin password, only it gives me a choice of the two accounts. It won't accept either password on either account. Same error message.

"I try to do certain stuff and it asks for an administrator password".

I think the key to that statement is AN administrator password.

There are a couple of possibilities going on. I suggest you boot into Windows 7 using the default administrator account and then go to Control panel> user accounts. Make some changes to the second account to include the user name and password, if possible and grant administrator privileges. I think there is also an option for the password to never expire. You can hit enter when changing the password to not require one.
