Specs: Windows 7
After Windows 7 update the logon screen did not have any user icons.
Shut down and restarted .... same problem.
Restarted in safe mode. Restored last update. Icons back.

5. Select Group policy object in left pane
6. Click Add
7. Click Finish in next window
8. Click OK
9. Expand Local computer policy
10.Expand Computer configuration
11. Expand Windows settings
12. Expand security settings
13.Expand Local policies
14.Select Security options
15. In right hand pane go to Interactinve logon: do not display last user name
16. Change to disable close console window and reboot. Now user names will be displayed.

There is an easier way to do this in the registry but I don't know how to do that
