WIN 7 X64 sees USB but NOT SATA external HDD

January 17, 2011 at 07:17:14
Specs: Windows 7, i7, 920 @2.67 GHz/6.00 GB
I am running win 7, 64bit

I have an external case with usb & sata connectors that has a wd terabyte hdd in it.

I can always access it via usb. However, the faster esata connection is very erratic. The esata never works on the front external connector.

I have gotten it to work on external sata connector on back of computer. However, now that i have rebooted i can't figure out how to get esata to be recognized.

you may require a new esata cable, or new drivers check with your motherboard manufacturer for updated sata drivers. make sure the connections to the mobo are well seated.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

Apparently when you run eSATA drives you need an additional power source for your hard drive. I believe you can use the USB port as the power source or on some you may need an external power supply. I have not used these myself yet, and I might not be correct (especially for all drives and all motherboards) but I remember reading about this when I was looking at external hard drives a number of months back. The paperwork that came with your case or their website may have a mention about this if you look closely.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
