Specs: Windows XP
Where is the very good search facility we had in XP. 7 won't find anything much, and if it does you can't go back to it - you have to search again!! 7 also refuses to save files where I want them. I don't like libraries, and not being able to find files I have just created because 7 wants to do its own thing. Have been using computers since Vic 20 and Gem - but this *** mess defeats me!!

I do a search and then put that search on the desktop just like you used to be able to save IE page links to the desktop.

I agree there is a lot that changed and for no reason that I can gather.

Windows 7 i really bad in searching and its indexing is eating resources and not really powerful since the index is out of date as soon you add a new file/folder to its directory.

How about that tool? there is a video about it on that page too. it might fit your needs?

This is an agonizingly common gripe with Windows 7 & so frustrating that many folks who went from XP/Vista to Windows 7 wished M$ would revert back to the previous search design.

In Windows 7, getting the best out of the built-in search requires becoming familiar with Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) system, by learning how to use the many syntax involved or using a third-party search utility. It might seem harsh, but there's purportedly a reasoning behind the search concept.

For anyone interested, here's a free PDF guide to Windows 7 Search.

Hi Sabertooth - Thanks for that pdf link - it's answered my problem with searching straight away - found the page and bang! sorted!
Have to say I never wanted any fancy smancy search...I prgram in C# and do lots of business stuff on my pc but liked some of the features and since I am trying to get qulified and work in C# I figured I should get up to date and migrate to Win 7 Pro and this weird searching is painful...I have got the AQS to a point but it 'seems' like the searches take way longer than XP Pro...maybe it's the visual green bar which seems to take forever on 500 to 1Tb hdd's ...but it seemed to search much much quicker on XP and the advanced options were crisp and easy to use ...ahhh why did they change it.

Anyways, I digress - reason for this post is to pat you on the back and say THANKS mate!!
