Win 7 hangs, won’t shut down properly

May 11, 2012 at 14:54:17
Specs: Windows 7
Hello, my PC hangs and won’t shutdown properly. It usually happens after use on the Internet. I get the message “application could not shut down-force shut down” than it hangs in Shutting Down mode. When I go to applications there are no running applications. So, I am forced to manually shut it down by pushing the Power Button. I have scanned my computer for Viruses via McAfee as well as removed and reinstalled Internet Explorer. I have also tried to disable the antivirus in case that was interfering somehow..no luck?
Please help

1. I would get rid of the McAfee. There are free programs that perform better, such as Microsoft Security Essentials.
2. Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Perform a full scan with it and remove anything it detects.
Let me know if virus-scanning fixes the problem.

When you shut down do you have any USB devices attached. A USB stick will often cause the shutdown process to stall.

I removed my portible hard drive and also ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. No Malware was detected. However, I still get the same issue of my PC hanging @ Shut Down when I try to reboot or power down. I get the errror message application running (no application running) force shut down and than I'm stuck and I have to manually power it down by pressing the power button..this is going to drive me to madness!

Perhaps try downloading Process Explorer and take a look at the processes running.

I agree with #4 above, Process Explorer will tell you more about what is running than Task Manager.
I agree with #1 that you should get rid of McAfee but I recommend Avast Free version.
Then Run msconfig and go to the Start Tab and uncheck all except Microsoft and your antivirus program, Apply and Restart the machine.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
