Win 7 boot failed then flashing cursor

June 18, 2013 at 11:35:11
Specs: Windows 7
I used laptop fine yesterday. Ran Norton 360 update and virus scan this morning. I also updated my Malwarebytes. Flash was waiting to update, but I selected remind me later. I had to shut off computer. Returned, turned on laptop and sign on was locked up. Turned off the computer because of yet another interruption, then turned it back on to see that the boot failed. I turned it off again, then tried to start in safe mode by pressing F8. Nothing happened, just a flashing cursor on a blank screen. I am currently using my Vista desktop to find answers.

Initial reaction? Sounds like the hard disk died.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!!! I let it sit (and my brain). I went back and tried F12, then went to F8, which it allowed. I was then able to then run diagnostics and a full virus scan. I didn't find anything and everything seemed to be functioning properly. So, I did a "hail Mary" and restarted out of safe mode. It worked! Who knows what computer gremlins were up to, but I have it back and it is working.

I keep my laptop and Win7 OS updated and my Norton 360 and Malwarebytes updated daily. I do regular maintenance each week, so this was a real slap. Thankfully, the little monster decided to stop with the harassment and is working again. However, I did threaten to see what happened if I threw it out of the second story window... So, who knows!

Does this maintenance involve backups?
