Will my data erase on my external drive?

Specs: Windows Vista
If i download windows 7 to my external drive will it erase all my memory? I get to upgrade to windows 7 free from my university but i either have to burn it on a dvd and then run it or put it on a usb flash with at least 4 gigs. I dont have a dvd drive on my laptop or a 4 gig usb flash drive but i do have an external drive way bigger than 4 gigs. The site warns me that I need to be sure that i dont have anything important on the usb because it will erase everything. Is this because windows 7 will take up all 4 gigs or because it just erases everything no matter the size. Im thinking its because it'll take all 4 gigs so if I use my external drive it wont erase anything because it has so much room. Is this right?

Another helper will expand on this but this does not sound legal to me... would a university jeopardize their license?

Sometimes Universities have purchased an Enterprise level unlimited license and want all students to have their version of Windows 7 with certain specials. A 4GB flash drive is getting real cheap these days, I think you can probably get one for around $5 or $6 Microcenter or at an Office supply store. That is what I would recommend, especially since after that you can wipe it use it to save/transfer files from computer lab work if you do not have your portable hard drive with you at the time.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
