Why is log in necessary when I start my lapto

Specs: Windows 7
When I turn on my Windows 2007 laptop, I always have to sign in. It's a nuisance as sometimes I have guests and they have to track me down to get the password. Is there a way to disable this or is it there for security reasons and should leave it alone?

It is there for your protection so nobody else can login in your absence or God forbid that your laptop got stolen, your data would be vulnerable.
