why does my Dell laptop say system not found

April 25, 2011 at 18:20:31
Specs: Windows 7
when I power up my laptop it shows a black screen that says operating system not found ! I have called Dell support and did everything they said to do and have had no luck. I dont want to lose some files that are on the computer. Is there anything I can do myself before taking it to a repair shop?

Use a Linux DVD to boot from (not installing) and see if your hard drive is accessible. If it is, then you can save your files to an external drive and do a factory restore (see manual) from your recovery partition.
If you can boot from the Linux disk but cannot access your hard drive either, then you probably have a dead hard drive. There is still a small possibility that a repair shop can remove the drive and off-load your files by connecting it to a desktop internally, especially if the problem is unrelated to the drive, or the drive is just spinning a little too slow to boot from.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
