Why does my computer shut down on it's own

Hewlett-packard / PAVILION

Specs: Windows 7, Intel Pentium D 925
When leaving my computer alone for awhile I will come back to find it has shut down on it's own. Any advice?

Thanks a bunch, Uncle Dewey

The first thing to check is your Power Settings in Control Panel. See if you have the hard drive set to shut off after so many minutes. Check the setting that says turn off hard drive/ never.

Above (advice in #1) is a good thing to do. Some machines have a problem when the hard drive powers down.
Also: Are you sure it is shut down and not just going into Sleep mode. If it wakes up quickly with a simple click of the mouse then this is the case. Sleep mode is to save energy and component life. In your power settings there is a time to go into Sleep mode, you can extend this if this makes it convenient, you can even set it to never but I recommend leaving it on generally if it is not a problem.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I thought for awhile that never shutting the hard drive down worked, but it did not. Also, I have noticed in the past that the hard drive was shutting down, but not the computer. I'm sure it is not in sleep mode as the power light is off. Windows tries to solve the problem of the unexpected shut down, but never any solutions.

And so it goes. Thanks for your interest. Uncle Dewey

I'll do what you suggest, John. It may be a while before I get back to you, but I will.
