where can I find the product key on my laptop

Specs: Windows 7
i keep getting a message saying my win7 is not genuine and it ask for product key

they obviously installed a fraud key and windows update put out an update that identified it as a bad key....talk to the person that installed it and let them know

Depends how you got it installed. If you have the Windows CD (and its genuine), then you will find the key on CD. If you got it pre-installed on your laptop/computer, it may be written on a sticker somewhere (in my laptop, its under the battery and vanity cover). Otherwise you will have to use one the free tools.

I understand that but let them play it out. We don't know the situation. May simply be a duplicate installation. Once the OP figures out what the issue really is then we can recommend a solution.

it was the INSTALLED key which is obviously the faulty one

You probably need to buy a copy of Windows 7. You can simply change the product key and not have to install Windows 7 again. Check with whoever installed 7 to figure out what you need to do. Either correct the problem with a valid key, buy a copy with a valid key, or remove 7.
