When I copy and paste, I get the last text

When I copy text into the computer buffer and then paste it into another document or elsewhere, I get the text I copied the time before. In other words the text is not being cleared from memory and when I paste, I get the former copy. Hope this makes sense. I delete what is pasted and copy and paste again, then it works properly. Anyone have any ideas why this text is not being cleared from memory so the new text will show when pasted? Thanks much.

Sorry, I meant clipboard, not buffer, above.
