Specs: Windows 7
I have an HP laptop Pavilion and when I click on "computer" in the start menu, I see four disks listed. They are Local Disk (C), Recovery (D), HP TOOLS (E), and Local disk (Q). I understand Local Disk (C), but what are the others for? Thanks

Those are more likely partitions on a single hard drive.

Local Disk (C): is where your operating system is installed to and most likely all software you have installed as well.

Recovery (D): is a partition HP will have put on the drive and it should contain the install files for your operating system. Those are there in case you ever need to reinstall the operating system and to do so would require you to read the manual that came with the unit.

HP Tools (E): This would be the HP tools you'll see available from the Start menu

Local Disk (Q): This would be another partition, or possibly another hard drive.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

Do you have microsoft office 2010? sometimes this creates a virtual drive with the letter Q or R.
