what is causing my pc to shut down unexpected

December 18, 2010 at 17:38:53
Specs: Windows 7
could be after 15 min, an hour, 3 hours, somtime overnight but I come in and its off and it could do it several times a day, or skip a day. Have run diagnostics, had everything checked out by a tech and still everything checks out fine. He has no idea why it does it. On startup it asks if you want to start it in safe mode but thats it. No clues as to whats going on. Any sugestions as to what could be causing this problem?

First check your power settings and make sure you are not going into an energy saving mode (sleep or Hibernate), especially if it does this while idle.

It could be a heat problem, especially if it does this under stress : download Speedfan to read your temperatures and identify what the temperatures are, what is hot, and if your fans are running (at least you should read CPU fan and at least one case fan and possibly GPU fan).

Use Memtest to test your RAM and use windows features or hard drive manufacturer's utilities to test your hard drive.

Try reseating all cards and plugs (leave CPU/heat sink alone unless you are getting high CPU temperature readings, then get a premium thermal compound before removing heat sink and read up on proper application).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
