If you have the Mcafee internet suite you may have to disable your firewall also.

Yes, I disable the firewall as well, doing a quick search round the internet, shows many people with similar problems.

Thanks for the link, I found the cbs log, but I cannot find any error messages that are the same as the ones listed. I will leave it for the moment , this looks like another Microsoft issue where they expect everyone to spend hours amending the update to conform with their own config.

I updated to SP1 without problems. All other updates were already done except 2 optional ones and I do not use McAfee (possible problem). The 2 optional ones were added after without problems. Try sending a note to MS.

Thanks Fingers, I don't usually have problems with updates, they have all completed ok , McAfee has never caused problems before, the only problems I had with virus software was with Spyware Doctor but I uninstalled that a while ago.

I have tried again - I ran the System Update Readiness tool first which showed no problems, the update ran for around 15 mins then failed with ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING ERROR 0X80073701. I have run scf.exe scannow but that shows no files are missing.

I cannot translate that for you, maybe someone else here can. If not, you may in the end wind up either trying a repair of windows, or possibly a back up followed by a factory restore followed by a Windows update, followed by reinstalling everything else (except I would recommend skip the McAfee and go with something better -- not Norton either --)

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thanks, but I am not prepared to reinstall Windows unless anything goes wrong just for the sake of the sp1 upgrade which I am sure I can live without.
I agree about Norton, it made my Vista pc so slow
I have emailed Microsoft Download Support Group will all the details.

I received a reply from Microsoft , they got me to do a clean reboot disablling all startup services but it still failed with the same error - I have send the CAB file off to them for further investigation..
