W7 laptop Boot up hangs at Please wait stage

Specs: Windows 7, pentium 4/ 512 MB ram
i have a window7 toshiba satellite laptop and it froze at the please wait screen in normal mode and in safe mode.

Not a good sign.....

Q: Age of laptop?

Q: Was AV (Antivirus) installed on that laptop, was the AV up to date?

When a system freezes up at startup, either something in the operating system is corrupt, or there could be a virus, or there is a hardware issue (overheating, failing hard drive, bad RAM, bad motherboard, bad fan, dirty clogged fan etc).

In order to test for all those, you have to have some knowledge on how to do all that. If it were me:

- I'd test the HDD first.
- Then run PC diagnostics (PC Doctor, TuffTest etc).
- Then run a AV Boot/recovery CD to scan for viruses if the above tests were ok.

OK - and Windows 7 actually RAN on this P4 with 512MB RAM???

Those are so far below the minimum requirements of:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
