W7 error Windows Explorer Not Responding

Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, 3 GHz / 1919 MB
I'm having a problem with my CD burner and DVD burner. Yes, two drives. When I insert a disk in either one the icon in My Computer does not change appearance. If I double left click either drive, the little "blue thing" goes round and round, finally after several minutes a window pops up telling me to put a disk in the drive. That's one scenario. The next scenario is if I click on one of my HHD while the little "blue thing" is going around I get a message that Windows Explorer is NOT responding.
Both drives are working normally as far as "device manager" is concerned. Both drives have been set to play the software if a software program is inserted.
I don't know where else to look.

Have you tried downloading the latest drivers for these drives? If this was an upgrade (from XP? or Vista?) you will need new drivers. XP drivers generally will not work, and while Vista drivers will often work, they will not always work (even drivers that were shipped with a new drive may not be the newest available ones).
Have you tried disconnecting one drive and trying to get one working first?

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Is this a newly occurring problem on an old installation or a new installation?

This is a new W7 installation.Did a driver scan and the report is all drivers up to date.
Several blogs that I have read indicate that the manufacture does not provide drivers and that the ones from Microsoft are sufficient.
The drive scan I did seems to bear this out.

You should always install the motherboard chip set drivers. They either came on a CD with the board or you can download them from the manufacturer's site.
