volume set high but sound is low

Specs: Windows 7
I never use to set my volume above about 40%, now set at 100% it sounds low.My sound card is realtek high definition audio driver version 6.0.1.5938 I use external speakers on my desktop windows 7. Sound mixer set at 100% and device manager said realtek driver working fine. Is it software or sound card,computer less than a year old.Are computer updates causing this.

Hello, There could be a few issues that are causing this.

Have you tried using the on-board sound?
If you are watching You Tube videos is the volume up on there?
If you can try and get hold of another sound card and test see if the problem occurs.
Roll back your updates to a day when the sound was working fine.

IF this is a laptop or an all-in-one, you may have a keyboard or physical sound control as well as the system sound mixer, and you may have both a Windows system sound control panel as well as a Realtek sound mixer/control panel so check that if you do, both are turned up (especially the one you normally do not use).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
