Solved VLC changes Many Icons to VLC

August 26, 2012 at 02:07:47
Specs: Windows 7
I updated to the latest version of VLC and it changed many of my icons to VLC. I uninstalled and the changes remain. For example Firefox 14 Pinned on the Taskbar (and on the Start Menu) shows the VLC icon and if I change it to Firefox in Properties it reverts to VLC even though VLC is uninstalled. However the Firefox icon shows on the Taskbar when Firefox is open.

If all else fails use System Restore to a date before you installed VLC.

By the way, you were very unlucky - many folk are using VLC without issue, including me on Win 7 and other operating systems.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Reinstall VLC and set the file associations you want during the setup.

Not the problem unfortunately. VLC is currently not installed (I uninstalled and re-installed and uninstalled etc in an attempt to remove the incorrect icons). The VLC icon has "hijacked" a number of the icons on the Start Menu and Taskbar. None of them are media files. Re-setting them to the correct icon using properties etc fails.

Tried that. That is how I got the taskbar and start menu Firefox to point at and start Firefox and indeed Windows Explorer which was opening VLC when I clicked on the Taskbar icon. But the icon pinned to the Taskbar remains the VLC one. Another similar example is Microsoft Word 2010. On the Task Bar and recently opened programs on the lower part of the Start Menu it is the correct icon but if I drag it/pin it to the "Favourites" above the line the icon changes from the Word one to the VLC one on the Staart Menu but not Taskbar. On the taskbar the correct Word icon shows when the program is closed. If I unpin it it then reverts to the correct Word icon on the Start Menu. So the shortcuts work now but the VLC icon lurks in a number of places against the wrong programs and using their properties etc to change/reset the icon fails whichever way I try to reset to the correct default icon for the program concerned.

More to try, if needed.

Click Start > In the Search box immediately above the Start button, Copy & Paste > msconfig & in the window that opens, click on msconfig.
In the System Configuration window that opens, in the General section, click on Normal startup, click > Apply & then OK.
Reboot.

With this, probably ticking the first 2 boxes in Screenshot 6, will be the way to go.

Thanks to everyone who helped. msconfig and sfc did not work. System Restore finally solved the problem even though an error message said unable to complete System Restore. With some trepidation I will re-install VLC (possibly an earlier version until the next release comes out - VLC were not interested in the problem unless someone here was from VLC) in a few days as I used previous versions with no trouble.
