View programs working in Background on Windows 7

Specs: Windows 7, Intel Pentium D 925
Quite often when shutting down the computer has to wait to close programs working in the background. Also, there are times when my computer is slow and I do not know why, so would like to see what program are working in the background.

So, is there a way for me to check which programs are working in the background and maybe even stop them from being opened in the first place?

Install CCleaner-Slim, click Tools > Startup. Very few of the entries are actually necessary but it seems that a lot of programs installed these days load at startup & run in the background. Disable or delete the ones you don't need. On this PC I only have 2 that load --- Realtek Audio & AMD Cat Control Center.

BTW, run the Cleaner & the Registry scanner while you're at it --- remove everything they find.

Have you got Skype because that is slow to close if you have it starting with Windows?

A virus is possible so as a quick check download the freebie here - green button top right:

To see what is running install Process Explorer from Microsoft.
Uninstall all programs that you did not install and do not use. Google those you are not sure about.
On programs that you do use, go to their options and set them so that they do not start with Windows but will start when you want them. They will also usually shut down that way when you close them.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hey Again,

I thought the background programs might be why my computer is so slow--I press a key and wait for the action. Also several programs will indicate Not Responding, but if I wait they will respond. I suspect the slow response and the not responding are the same problem. Since the problem is recent I Restored to 12/18/14, but to no avail. I then took a look at Process Explorer and felt over whelmed. So I ran both CCleaner and SpyDot, but still have the problem. I used Task Manager and see several files using a lot of the memory so I have a list of about four that I will see what they really are and can I delete those files. The one I'm working on is NAPSTAT.EXE, but don't know yet if I can delete the file. I also saw UPNPCONTIE. EXE *32, CCMON32.EXE, and DPLAYSVR.EXE *32. As time permits I'll keep plugging along.

I wouldn't delete any individual files unless you are absolutely certain about them - even then doing so will leave registry entries. Only uninstall programs which use those files (assuming they are unwanted programs obviously).

Run MalwareBytes as per #2 just to make certain.

Thanks for your advice, Derek--I'd have to find out what programs use those files. I tried something today and I don't know yet if it worked--at the moment I think it may have. Windows 7 has a nice menu if you press esc while booting. One of the options allows me to "fix" Windows start up, which took a long time, but I'll let you know for sure that it worked. They also offered Restore, and Recovery (start from scratch) The Restore did not have any Restore Dates while it had at least three a day or so ago--hmm.

OK thanks for feedback. Had to mention leaving files alone because we've seen too many disasters on here due to folk hacking them out. If you can't work out the programs that use them it is better to leave them in place than risk producing worse problems.

Look at your programs list (Control Panel>Programs) and uninstall any that you really do not use. Google any you are not sure of to see what they are, who put them there, and what they do to see if they are needed. Many programs are installed by the system mfg. because someone is paying them to.
What antivirus program are you using? There are many popular antivirus programs that waste system resources including Norton and McAfee and their more complete packages are even worse. Many of these also include a firewall that installs itself instead of the Windows one, thees are rarely better and almost always use more memory and processing power. Many here recommend either Windows Defender or Avast free version as being better and less 'heavy' on your system (both free). I also recommend Webroot Secure Anywhere (basic version) which I feel uses system resources even better (though you have to pay for it) and you never notice it unless there is a problem, then even the warnings are less annoying. Use any of these with Windows Firewall.

As I said earlier, Windows 7 provides a startup menu if you press esc. while booting. One of the F-keys provided has a description of Windows Recovery. Under Windows Recovery there are three options: Restore, which brings you back to a previous boot date date; another one provides System Recovery, which is starting all over again with your original Windows and all your programs have to be reinstalled; while the last one is labeled Microsoft Startup Repair Tool, which is the one I used. It got rid of my very slow system--no longer have to wait for many things to occur. {:-)))

I still want to investigate Process Explorer as I don't like anyone using the background unless I want it or know about it.

Is there some reason you prefer not to run MalwareBytes as per #2. It is a free program and often finds what other AV's and malware programs miss, which is why it was suggested.

If it finds nothing then we can probably put malware on the back burner and, if still necessary, concentrate on other possibilities.

The thing I like about Process Explorer is that if you hover over an item, it gives you information that often helps to identify it. It also allows you to stop a process and see if the effect is good or bad, it will not let you stop a critical process required by Windows and the worst that can happen is that you just have to force a restart on the machine and everything is back to how it was. If a process is stopped, things work better, and it does not cause any problems, then you can go further and find out exactly what is connected with the process and either stop it from running automatically when Windows starts, or uninstall it if it is really not needed.

Hi Derek,

I checked and I do have Skype installed, but I don't see any reason as to why it is installed. Could it contribute to slow response of key entries and some programs responding slowly?

Skype does have a knack of taking a few seconds to shut down. However it will not contribute much to general slowness and if you set it not to start with Windows it will not have no impact at all unless it is in use. To do this start Skype then go to "Tools > Options > General Settings" where you will find a check box. Of-course if you feel you will never use it then you can always uninstall it.

Did MalwareBytes come up clean?
