Solved very slow startup on windows 7 after Windows update

November 15, 2013 at 06:55:05
Specs: Windows 7
I normally have my auto updates set to ask me when to update. But 3 days ago when i shut down I was told windows was installing updates. I let them run. Next morning when starting up i got a message saying

"Update operation 32016 of 32016"

it stayed on the screen for about 3 minutes then the computer booted as normal.

That night on shutdown 23 more updates were installed. My settings were still set to "ask me"

Next morning it took my computer 8 minutes to get to the log on screen. I have rebooted 3 more times and the time is almost the same each time.

I have no illegal software , I don't run games or visit dodgy sites and have McAfee installed.

Any ideas please

Have you checked to see if your settings are still set for Update advice only? There could have been some glitch or other that changed the settings.

Also look in "Windows Update > View update history" which might tell you more about what is going on.

If the situation continues have a look in msconfig > Startup tab to see if something new has gotten stuck in there.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Many thanks,

I checked MSconfig and found a new piece of advertising software from real player. I got rid of it and all is fine.

Many thanks

Consider dumping RealPlayer and using VLC instead. Check it out on all file types that you use RealPlayer for - it will do all but the old obscure ones. Some might work in Windows Media Player but without knowing the file types you use it is hard to say.

IMHO RealPlayer is "not nice".

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
