USB drive not recognized, Win 7 x64 wants to format it but c

Specs: Windows XP
A single Win 7 x64 system sees USB drive as raw
I have a single Win 7 x64 laptop that fails to properly recognize a USB memory stick or a USB hard drive. In Disk Management they show up as RAW. They do work on other Win 7 or XP systems. Any attempt to format them on the affected system fails. They can be formatted, written and read on other systems. I have tried the HP tool and it also fails to format the drives.

It would have to be a very unusually problem with the usb port I'd guess. If the drives work fine in other systems and not this one then we tend to assume it is the single computer. In some linux issues there is a driver missing but windows tends to have full support for usb controllers and usb drives.

I guess you could verify this with a live bartsPE or VistaPE disk or better still a live linux cd booted to that single system. If it fails too then we can think it is the usb controller.

Hang up and live.
