USB 16&32GB Flash Drives work OK up to 8GB then slow

September 13, 2012 at 08:05:46
Specs: Windows 7
1st. 8GB copies OK then slows to 200/300Kb/s. All files(MP3 or JPEG) copied at slow speeds are shown in Windows Explorer as being on the Flash drives but are 0MB after copying completed. Checked for driver updates and all reported as latest.

Don't forget, that windows is caching the files, you are copying.
So windows copies the first files with a real good speed, as long, as it uses it's cache memory.
When cache is filled up, windows starts the real copy job to the USB device.

But anyway, 200/300Kb/s is to slow.
Can you try this with another USB flash drive, or maybe on another computer?

Thanks paulsep, but even trying again to add 291MB of MP3 files, several days later, it still took 50mins. at @ 380KB/s to copy & I then waited another 50mins. but the result was the same. All files are shown to exist on the flash drive but as 0MB. At least one should have completed its copy in that time!
I have tried 2 16GB & 2 32GB Flash drives, same result. I thought these cheap flash drives might have a mix of old & new Nand memory & incompatibility issues...?

Maybe it's the cheap things.
Often "cheap buys twice".

Thank you paulsep for taking the time to try & help me solve my problem. Lesson learnt. At least I have 4x "8GB" flash drives to constantly remind me "cheap buys twice" Now using 1TB Hitachi portable hard drive - works perfect & cheaper per GB than flash drives!

But harder to put in your pocket, to take it with you :-)
