Upgrade XP PC to Win7 what I need to know?

January 25, 2010 at 20:52:16
Specs: Windows XP, P4- 2.8 quad core 2gb
What needs to be done to upgrade a desktop or laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7?

Has anyone done that yet??

Do I have to move my data??

I have tons of computer experience, but have not done anything with Windows 7. All of my experience is with Windows XP.

Thanks for the suggestions

First you need to check with Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if any of your laptop's hardware or software is not Windows 7 compatible, and, if not, whether your laptop manufacturer has Windows 7 drivers for it.

On a laptop, whilst you can upgrade software to a Windows 7 compatible version, you cannot upgrade the hardware so please check for driver availability first with the laptop manufacturer.

Drivers for laptops are custom made for the manufacturer so if they don't have a Windows 7 driver for, say, the graphics chip or sound chip, you are going to struggle to find one that works.

If, after checking the driver situation and installed software compatibility, you decide to go ahead, a 'clean' install of Windows 7 on to an empty partition is far less likely to give you problems in the days and weeks ahead compared to doing an "in place" upgrade.
