Solved Upgrade Vista Ultimate 32-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

June 16, 2014 at 15:40:21
Specs: Windows Vista
I currently have Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I've backed up my data onto my external drive and am ready to clean install WIndows 7, however, when I mount the disk to my drive and click "Setup", it just says "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running.".

What is my best way of proceeding?

There is no upgrade as is mentioned from 32 bit to 64bit without destroying any original data. So I hope you grabbed any data before the new installation. Also when selecting drivers to install remember you have 64bit operating system the 32 bit versions are not interchangeable.

You can't upgrade your 32 bit Vista with a 64 bit version of Windows 7. You need to perform a clean install. Boot directly to the DVD.

Also you don't mention your system specs. Make sure your machine can handle 64-bit before attempting to reformat/install.

Yes I think the problem was that mounting an image file to your drive doesn't cut it, you have to burn the .iso to a DVD. I'm trying that now.
