There is no upgrade path from XP to W7, it is a fresh install only.

Did you ever run the compatibility software prior to installing W7 ?

You need to back up you data and undertake a fresh install of Windows XP:

Look in your Control Panel for Programs and features. All installed programs should be listed there. If Windows 7 is listed you may be able to remove Windows 7.

As was pointed out above, there is no approved upgrade path from WinXP to Windows 7. What you now have is dependent on how you actually installed Windows 7. You may have installed to a new folder or even partition, in which case WinXP may still be intact.

Browse the root directory of your C drive to see if both are listed.

Did you need to re-install all your programs after installing Windows 7?

HP supply a recovery parttion which can be accessed by repeatedly pressing F10 at startup, so long as you didnt delete the hidden partition you can go back and reinstall to the original factory spec, however safe all your files first, once you have xp setup, you can then reinstall win7 on a second partion and dual boot.
suggest the compat test thing first before installing win 7 again.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....
